Opinions about chain lube are as numerous and strongly held as those about engine oil, and if you search this forum you'll find lots of threads on the topic. Although gear oil lubricates very well, some people prefer a dry, wax-based lube such as DuPont All-Purpose Lube with Teflon.Comment

Chain wax won't do much good on a non o-ring chain.

My thumb worked as lube for my chain. I wouldn't recommend it though cause sometimes you need more grip than that.
