    removing valve stem seals

    Anyone have a trick for removing these G*# D!@M valve stem seals? 80' 1000G.....arrrrrr. I was thinking of replacing the valve stem seals on my 78' 1000 without taking off the head (there was a good walk through on here about how to do it) but now that I have my 80' 1000G head on the bench I'm being reminded how freakin' hard they can be to get out.

    Heat them up and pull them out with pliers.
    1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
    1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

      I just use some needle nose pliers and they come right off.

        needle nose pliers or a spoke where u use the head to pry off the seal and its bent half way along for grip

          Plenty of heat and a pair of vice grips, Chanel locks and a screw driver..

            Be careful, though, you don't want to break off the top of the guide on which it sits.

                I used a Dremel to modify the tips of a large pair of cheapo needlenose pliers so they would be able to grip valve stem seals better. Grab, twist to loosen the bond, and pull.

                It's still pretty difficult to get them out after 30 years.

                  Thanks for all the input everyone, muchly appreciated. I did of course get them all out but man were a few of them a bugger. It's one thing to fight with them when the head is on the bench but I've really been contemplating replacing them on the other bike without removing the head but I sure questioned that with the effort it took on the bench. I'm thinking the heat idea is going to be the way to go while the heads on the bike, a bit of heat and a needle nose should do the trick, I hope.

                    Squeeze them with a pair of pliers and again 90° from the first. Grab the seals with the pliers - rocking side to side while while at the same time pulling them off the stem.

                      oohhhh...dont' you worry, that's what I did, for wayyyyy too long. Heat next time!

                        I broke my guide taking them off, burn the rubber out with a bernzomatic and pull them off
