GS1100 Crank turns 180* then catches

So today I go out to install my new clutch basket and I try to rotate the crank and it only rotates about 180* before it catches on something! I pulled the stator cover to see if something was stuck, the valve cover to see if a valve was stuck, and I don't see anything that's stopping it!

    any suggestions?

I thought about that, but I hadn't even touched the valve cover prior to this. I can hear a metal-on-metal collision ever so slightly. I'm totally baffled.

Still I'd check it. Did you have the tensioner out at all?

I'll check it out. I figure at this point that's really the only culprit.

I mean, if the crank isnt catching on the clutch basket(removed), the cylinders aren't stuck, then the only two things it could be are incorrect timing or incorrect cam chain tension right?

Unless a screw or something fell in and is hitting something, yes.

I don't think incorrect tension can do it, unless the chain skipped a few teeth while it was loose.

So it looks like I'm going to remove the head to see what's going on. Any chance I can do that without taking the engine off the frame?

No, just pop the valve cover off and check the cam timing. Easy stuff.

Timing looks good, I suppose I'll disconnect the cam chain from the cams and freely rotate each cam and the crank to figure out which one is getting stuck.

You might want to look at the basket teeth, and the matching teeth on the crank. Maybe a piece of debris is stuck down into one of the teeth.

if he did nothing but R&R the basket then why remove the head?

His idea, there's no reason to pull the head. I never got an answer to the question about if he did anything with the cam chain tensioner, if he did it's possible the chain slipped a few teeth.
