A busted clutch cable shouldn't stop you riding, start in first on the starter and away you go, when you up/down shift drop revs right off and a firm gearshift and you away, when you must stop at lights, whatever, down shift to first and pull on the brakes till the motor stalls, no damage all spiffy. What could be simpler?

Best bike I owned for that was an R80 with R100 conversion, still running the original gearing. That thing was a stump-puller, as proved one day when the clutch cable broke and I had to get home in heavy traffic. Several unavoidable stops were dealt with no problem, then an idiot in a car in front of me was dithering around on a hill and I had to do the electric start in gear trick on a 20% slope.
It didn't bother it at all.

I recall a lot of threads/posts concerning 'black' and 'silver' hub splines, but, IIRC, was all about 850's/1000G's, don't recall any references to 650's in the same context-

I can vouch for the black ones on the 850s - not a trace of wear on either of mine.

From my memory just from reading around here, 82 and prior would be the bad ones and Suzuki made it stronger for 83 on. But I have an 1100 so that was what I focused my reading on. Not sure about the 650.
