    secondary drive compatability

Done some research but maybe someone has experience here.

It appears the 1000 and 1100 secondary drives are the same and the 850 is different somehow.

    Can anyone confirm this?

Pretty sure the final drives are all the same.

The 850 ratio is different and not geared as tall I believe.

As Earl said, the 850 uses a different secondary ratio. It has a 16/17 ratio, the 1000 and 1100 have a 17/16 ratio.

The flange for the driveshaft is also larger on the 1000 and 1100, so if you change your secondary gears, you need the driveshaft that matches those gears.

The final drives for the 850, 1000 and 1000 are basically all the same, but the '83 1100 got a taller ratio. It went from the previous 3.1 to a 2.9.

The final drives for the 650 and the 450GA are different than the larger bikes, I don't think they are compatible, but don't know for sure.
A quick look at the cross-reference charts shows that the '81/'82 650 final drives are the same, but there is a different part number for the '82/'83 450GA and 650G, GL and M (Katana).

        Thank You Gentlemen.

The other forum I'm on doesn't hold a candle to the GSR!

One other detail for future reference: on the GS850, the flange on the secondary drive and driveshaft is verrrrrry slightly different in the 79-81 models vs. the 82-83 models, and the later driveshaft won't bolt up to an early secondary drive; the bolt holes are in slightly different places.

          Guess how I learned this...

Also, make sure you use the correct hardened Suzuki bolts with red thread locker. They're an oddball length, so no substituting from the hardware store. I've seen some scary things when you peel that rubber boot back...

I put the final drive from an 1100 on an 850. No difference I could tell.

If it was from an '82 1100, they share the same part number so, indeed, you should have noticed no difference.

The GK rear end has a taller ratio but not by much.
