Transmission problem - lost Gears 1, 2 and 3 while driving (GS 550)

I'm hoping for help diagnosing my GS 550 - I where cruising along and all of a sudden I couldn't change down from 4th gear? I could still change beetween 4, 5 and 6th gear...?

I don't know what happened. I should mention that the shift has been difficult to change up and down since I got the bike, but now it just wont do anything.

I'm just hoping to diagnose the problem and see weather or not to do the full rebuild or if it's gonna take too much money to fix?

Your difficulty shifting was a warning. Pull the clutch off and take a peak- maybe it's in pawls, otherwise it's internal to transmission,

Is your shifter returning to center between gears shifting down

I'll take a peek at the clutch.

The shifter returns to center after shifting.

Could be a bent shift fork.

Could also be as simple as screwy shifter linkage.
