GS850 Streetfighter

Well, obviously it's been awhile since I've posted. So here's an update.

Been working diligently, painting, sandblasting, etc, every part I can lay my hands on. Got a spare parts bike, that had just about everything else that I needed (stock wise), plus I'm working on getting my other 'custom' parts.

Tank is off a 2001 kaw ZRX-1200. Working on getting that mounted today, be done by tonight.

Still waiting on drag bars.

The side covers ... I filled them with sheet metal, and smoothed them out.

Rear tail right now, probably a gixxer, but haven't decided yet. I've got a 'junk' one coming, just to see if I like it or not.

Stock wheels, sandblasted, primed with self etching primer, painted with Rust-o-leum 'industrial' enamel. Considering that I put the tires on myself, and inflicted only a couple of minor scratches to them, I'm confident that they will be fine.

Thanks man!! I'm excited to get the tail section, and see what it looks like as well. I've got a 'long' way to go, part of it is because I'm being a little bit 'anal' about everything, plus I have to rebuild the motor.

I worked on the guages a little bit last night, although I'm rather disappointed that I'm going to be using 'stock' guages. I've got a big 5" Autometer tach that I wanted to use, but I don't see a way that it will work.

Why wouldn't the tach work? Is it a mounting or functional issue?

It's a functional issue. I don't think that the ratio would be correct on it (although I haven't confirmed exactly), and I don't want to go modifying the tach to make it work, when I have a perfectly good 'other' project down the road that it'll work for no problems. LOL

I think what it is, is what it is.

Shaftie ... Can't see any other shaft swingarm and rim that will work ... Tried VX, No go... absolutely will not fit.

Just because something is a shaft, you can't automatically assume 'swapability'.

(As the poster above, unless he's actually done it and can provide pictures. lol)

Im not assuming anyting Indy, just sugesting options. i figure a weel from a shaft driven bike could be machied to fit more easily than a chain driven weel.

Sorry, not to sound inflammatory at my previous post. Believe me though, I've looked. Even tried thinking of ways of widening the stock rear swing arm, however with the 'working' angle of the driveshaft, the usable widening would be minimal, at best.

If anyone knows any proven options, I'm all ears, but I've gone through what I've thought.


Disappointing, I almost wish I had bought a chain drive bike. But on the other hand, the shaft looks very 'clean', so six of one ....

Yea, I thought about that, but that doesn't really get around the 'narrowness' of the swingarm.

Ok, need a little design help here.

This is a gixxer tail.

I was aiming for two things initially with the current placement.

1. The part of the tail that sits on the 'side covers'. The bottom of the tail is perpendicular with the top frame rail.

2. The 'up' angle from the bike frame, is fairly equal with the 'up' angle of the tail.

But, I also admit, that I'm not really 100% happy with the tail, not only the placement, but the general overall look. The tank, while definately not a GS tank, still 'fits' on the frame, and compliments it. The tail is almost too 'angly' (I'm making up my own words now! lol) making it almost look too crotch rockety (there I go again. lol )

FWIW, a *lot* of the Euro streetfighters have their tails hanging up into outer space.

The way you have it set up looks good IMO. :-D The only downside is that the seat is gonna shove you into the tank in a sensitive area, if you know what I mean.

But if you don't like the look, maybe relax the angle of the tail supports you tacked in?

Hi I think your bike looked like it was comeing along fine until i saw the rear end, just my personal taste but i think it looks wrong for the bike and the angle is way (ANGLY) lol it puts the focus on the rear and away from the rest of the bike, i think the look should be even from front to back not just in one area, but as i said its just my taste and thoughts, as long as you look at it and like it then its wright>
