    81 GS750L Only will run on starting fluid, but quickly dies afterwards. HELP!

    Im currently working on a basketcase 81 gs750l that I got off a buddy of mine. This time last year, we had it started, and it ran (it was much warmer outside) I don't know what to do next. I took the spark plugs out and sprayed starting fluid down into the cyclinder, and then hooked up my fuel line to a gas source (currently not running a tank). bike fires right up, runs good for about 5 seconds, and dies. Attempt to start, acts like it wants to start, and nothing.

    First of all, THROW THE STARTING FLUID AWAY.

    Next, clean your carbs, then report back.

    It is quite obvious that the pilot circuits are not open and flowing any gas. This will require a full "strip and dip" cleaning, NOT just dropping the bowls and spritzing some cleaner on what you can see.

    If you need some help with that, bring the carbs to me (I am just over half an hour north of you) and I will help you do them.

      Here's the carb cleaning tutorial.



      If you want it to run correctly, there are no shortcuts. The bike requires the proper mixture of air and fuel. After you get the carbs clean and rebuilt, it will be time to get the proper airflow.

      It's not an overnight procedure to get it running right. With some work and patience, you'll be riding soon.

        How much? I live in West side Cincy. I'm still new to carbs.

                    Hi Mr. NatiKiD,

                    I don't think I have properly greeted you with my "mega-welcome". It contains a couple of maintenance lists which are mandatory. Go through the lists and address each task using the proper procedures which you will find in the links below.                         *** UPDATE ***

                        So I spoke with the previous owner. He states the Carbs were cleaned a few years ago. The bike just sat and never was really riden. He also says that when the carbs were being clean, one of the "posts" in the carbs broke. He said it was drilled out and reinstalled, but with JB weld. Should I waste my time on these carbs or buy new ones?

                          "Cleaned" is subject to alot of interpretation,and if bike has sat idle with fuel in carbs for a while, it's time again. Make that call!

                              no need to worry about the post, unless it's loose and wobbly, but if it's in solid and not moving then no need to worry about it
