    Ashy build up in carb??

I am cleaning my carburetors for the first time and one of the carbs has and ashy build up in it. The bike sat for at least 8 years before I got it. The ashy deposit is mostly in the carb body but there is a little the float bowl. I soaked it in Berrymans carburetor dip for 20 or more hours and the ashy material is still there. I am using a dental pick to scratch it off, but it is taking forever. What causes this ashy build up and is there a more efficient way to remove it?

its corrosion. wire brush or vapour blasting is a good way to get rid of it

Mostly likely caused by water in the system, as Agemax said, its corrosion. Dremel with small wire wheel is something I have done before

I got some of these in brass from Harbor Freight for my Dremel.
        They work like a champ!

I did a quick glass-beading at fairly low pressure, followed by a trip through the dishwasher while the wife was gone....
