Replacement advice needed for '82 1100 OEM air filter element
The title says it all. The housing is intact but the foam is crumbling. Just learned via an online parts search that the OEM filter element is NLA. Anyone know of an aftermarket thats still available? Thanks!Common sense has become so uncommon that I consider it a super power.

I also have an 82 GS1100G with an aftermarket air filter. It was like that when I bought it recently. For some reason it is wedged in there with a piece of wood. I was wondering if this is a common problem and what anyone has done that is a better idea.Dale

I've seen the same thing happen on a GK I had quite awhile ago and did the same thing to address it.Common sense has become so uncommon that I consider it a super power.

I haven't been able to access any dslextreme links that I've found here including this one. I always get an "error 522 connection timeout" error. If someone could post that pdf file here or send it to me I would appreciate it.Dale

Try this one. It shows replacing the foam on the airbox. Replacing the foam on the filter cage is similar. Key thing is to find the right thickness of foam.

That Uni filter works great. I've used it on a couple of bikes. Don't forget to oil it correctly.1980 GS1000G - Sold

Thanks Ed for that link. Is it necessary to seal the covers? As long as the air goes through the filter should be the only concern, right? That's always been a mod to get more air by drilling holes or removing the cover. Also, if you take up the slack using foam, how do you slide it back in without messing up the foam on the cage?Dale

Seal the covers. That way the air intake goes through the snorkle inlet tube, not through gaps in the side cover.Ed
