Scenario: 1982 GS650E got it free off craigslist from the original owner. He put 6k miles on it then parked it in the bed of a truck that was parked in his back yard in 1989, where it sat, uncovered, until around 2003, when the bed of the truck rotted away and the bike fell over.
Anyway, got it home and cleaned up, rewired the whole thing. All the wiring was good, albeit a bit "creative". I removed most of the safety switches, took off the ignition and swapped it for a button temporarily, changed the oil, cleaned the carbs and got some fresh fuel in it and low and behold she ran. Not great, but she ran.
So recently, in my infinite wisdom, i was working on it and didn't want to wait on the battery to charge, so I hooked up a mostly dead 20v drill battery and started it up. Worked fine until that battery totally died. Again, in my infinite wisdom, I grabbed a fresh one (instead of the battery that went to the bike that was now charged) hooked it up and it started it up. A couple weeks go by and now it won't even pop for me. Absolutely no spark at the plugs. I've tried resistor and non resistor plugs, swapped out the ignition coils, double checked all the wiring.
Finally got to the signal generator, tested the coils and they're out of range (something like 68ohms and 138ohms)
I've looked everywhere to get these things new, but all I've found are these:
Which i have been told by the seller are direct replacements for the pickup coils. But, obviously, I'm dubious of believing that.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
