    1982 GS650E More Ignition Issues & Gremlins

Alright here I am again, with more gremlins and not enough bells.

Scenario: 1982 GS650E got it free off craigslist from the original owner. He put 6k miles on it then parked it in the bed of a truck that was parked in his back yard in 1989, where it sat, uncovered, until around 2003, when the bed of the truck rotted away and the bike fell over.

Anyway, got it home and cleaned up, rewired the whole thing. All the wiring was good, albeit a bit "creative". I removed most of the safety switches, took off the ignition and swapped it for a button temporarily, changed the oil, cleaned the carbs and got some fresh fuel in it and low and behold she ran. Not great, but she ran.

So recently, in my infinite wisdom, i was working on it and didn't want to wait on the battery to charge, so I hooked up a mostly dead 20v drill battery and started it up. Worked fine until that battery totally died. Again, in my infinite wisdom, I grabbed a fresh one (instead of the battery that went to the bike that was now charged) hooked it up and it started it up. A couple weeks go by and now it won't even pop for me. Absolutely no spark at the plugs. I've tried resistor and non resistor plugs, swapped out the ignition coils, double checked all the wiring.

Finally got to the signal generator, tested the coils and they're out of range (something like 68ohms and 138ohms)

I've looked everywhere to get these things new, but all I've found are these:

Which i have been told by the seller are direct replacements for the pickup coils. But, obviously, I'm dubious of believing that.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Yep, your freshly charged tool battery likely fried the original ignitor.
What you have on that ebay listing is a knock-off of the Dyna system, the pickups are actually fully contained pickups and ignitors in their own right.
They simply replace the ignitors and directly control the coils.
The knock-off ones SEEM to be reliable so far. A couple of members here have used them for a couple of years and so far there's been no reports of failure.
I've got one, but not fitted it yet.

Outstanding! Thank you for your reply.

Next question is, how do I get this pay part separated to get the magnet on?

My first instinct is to cut off the little dog ears on top, but that seems like a brute force approach that im hesitant about taking.

So just a little update on this:

I ended up taking the tips of the dog ears off that kept the piece from being able to slide off. Just BARELY touched them to the belt sander with something like 800 or 1000 grit on it.

The next problem i faced was getting the black adapter with the magnet onto the original shaft. It was just a hair too tight so what I did was take a drill it that was much much smaller than what I needed, then wrapped electrical tape around it until it was almost the right size then on top of that, put a layer of sand paper and ran that through it. Ended up having to use two layers of sand paper in the end. All said and done it worked pretty damn well. Bike runs like a dream now. Well at lower RPMs. I think I need to adjust the advance a bit or something, as it bogs down about mid way through every gear.
