Ok thats the first thing I will do when I get home from work ..now its a little tricky to hold the throttle to keep the revs at 5000 rpm while doing test .but if I putthe choke on that gets me just above 4500 rpm will that do ? Or should i adjust idle a little so rpms are axactly at 5000Originally posted by rustybronco View Post

Put the leads in a pair of wires, start bike, rev engine, look at meter. Wash rinse and repeat for the other two pairs
Put three dots in a triangle on a piece of paper. How many times can you connect the two leads from the volt meter up to those three dots?

It's the jumping around that bothers me... Shouldn't be doing that.
Make sure you have a good connections AND, remember what I said about the wall socket? There was a reason for saying what I did. Care to guess why?

My '78 and '79 with split Rectifier and Regulator both cooked it's stator. This test will give you the best answer as to its condition. Always double check your results and leave your pride at the door. There are no stupid questions except the ones you don't ask.
What he said about the erratic readings. Maybe it's time to do all the required harness, plug switch and ground maintenance. It might eliminate some tail chasing. Check your plug caps, they would be the first suspect for radio frequency noise.

YEP, and to see if it's jumping around.
