1982 gs850g oil leak from stator cover

Hello everyone, so I had some help under the electrical/ignition section, but now it's become a general/maintenance problem =(
Here is my original post http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=175458, just as a point of reference. I copied my most recent post, but redman was gracious enough to inform me that this has become a general/maintenance problem and being the more appropriate place I would get better help in this section.

"So finally got to putting the bike together. I went with the option of directly connecting to the r/r.

    1) I didn't know what to do with the pass thru cable tho? The r/r that was on there before did not have this cable.

    2) After putting my stator cover back on, I noticed that there was some epoxy putty on the bottom. Must have been from previous owner. I continued on hoping for the best. Took the bike out, it turns on, that's a good start at least. Still not sure if it's actually charging but time will tell. Rode got a 15 min ride, it was a bit choppy, but it evened out after warming up.

However, got to a friends place, went inside for a few mins. When I came out, there was oil pooling. After closer inspection, where i saw that epoxy, I could clearly see a steady drip of oil coming from the bottom screw.

I thought I didn't put in the gasket correctly, but, it doesn't look like it's leaking from the gasket but from the screw directly. I tried tightening it, but I'm afraid of over tightening and stripping it.

Any suggestions? New cover? New gasket? More epoxy putty?

Is the cover cracked? If so, I'd get it welded or replace it.

I didn't notice any cracks, but I didn't think to look. I didn't even notice the epoxy putty till i was putting on the cover. Sigh, looks like I'll have to drain the oil and take the cover off again :'(

Just lean it against something solid so it tilts to right and you shouldn't have to drain oil. Remove stator cover and carefully scrape off all the gook and determine why epoxy was used. It takes time, but you need to have a decent surface for the new stator cover gasket. When reinstalling cover, use inspection mirror to make sure gasket didn't shift when you put screws in, BEFORE you tighten screws.

No need to lean the bike against anything (that's a great way to end up on the floor) -- on the centerstand, a GS850 will only lose a few ounces of oil when you remove the stator cover. Just put a drain pan under there and proceed.
