Below are photos of my Athena base gasket that extrude out of place at 27 ft-lbs torque. Torqued head, rode the bike though a couple heat cycles, came back and checked the nuts and was surprised by how loose they were. Retorqued nuts and checked back again after a couple more heat cycles only to note loose nuts again. After the third tightening noticed the gasket extruding out of place. Conclusion: Athena base gaskets SUCK since they can't take the normal torque load.

Member bwringer have had similarly poor experiences with Veshra gaskets.

Use what you want, but in my opinion, using anything other than OEM gaskets are just plain stupid unless you enjoy gambling.

For a clutch or valve cover it's not much of a gamble. Worst case, you do it again next year. No big deal.

Exactly my point. My valve cover has been through several heat cycles and I have checked the bolts and they are still tight and no leaks. Now a head and a base gasket would be a different story personally.

Vesrah are not Athena - the Vesrah's are on a par with OE in my experience.

I'd be using them if I could get them locally.

Right - all you original is best guys, shoot me down...But that's my experience of 20 plus years of using them.

I've been using Vesrah and OEM and never had a problem with either. Although that Athena base gasket picture is cause for thought - think I'll swerve them.
Given that many makers buy in from subbies, I wonder who actually makes the OEM sets anyway?

I had two aftermarket valve cover gaskets fail on my GS. One while on a GS rally, one while just riding down the street here in Indy. Pulled them off and they crumbled in my hand. And the bike had an oil cooler, so temps were not an issue. Went back to OEM, no more problem
I used Vesrah gaskets on my GPz and KZ and they were fine.
I also used Cometic clutch and stator cover gaskets on the GS with no problems.

Base Gaskets and Head gaskets, go OEM for sure.
Everything else...aftermarket works fine, since it's easy to swap out.
I've had oem and aftermarket leak.
