    Drop oil pan? 1982 GS1100GK

    Hello,

    I am changing all fluids and do other maintenance work on my 1982 GS1100GK that I recently bought and I am wondering if I should remove the oil pan to check for any sludge and metal shavings.

    The bike has ~15,000 miles on the odometer and seemed to have been in decent technical shape when I bought it.

    Would it be the right thing to drop the oil pan?

    I wouldn't unless you have specific reason to. Removing the pan involves removing the exhaust, and there is a chance that the exhaust bolts will be seized...which often leads to them breaking off. There are ways to avoid broken bolts of course, but many many people try to force things and at the end of the day I'd leave well enough alone on such a low mileage bike.

    A better use of time would be to read through the Newbie Mistakes thread and look for things to tackle, like rewiring the charging system and installing a SH775 R/R.

      The oil and magnetic drain plug looked clean when I drained the oil.

            Yep, don't bother pulling the pan. It's fine in there.

            Congrats on finding such a low-mileage example!

              That's one of those listed "regular maintenance" I've never done, cleaning the screen that feeds oil back into the oil pan. Glad to hear I ain't missing nothin'
