whose seat still has the ez-break trim?

Hey all,

Just received a bunch of pricey plastic bits from Bikebandit.com (best purchase ever: new speedo case... instant new bike look everytime i glance down) including my long lost "chrome" trim strips on my seat.

On an 81 GS850G, by the way...

Trouble is I don't have a refence as to how they mount (shop manual's no help, unless i just cant find the right page...)

The strips each have these four little plastic pegs that poke through the vinyl and the seat pan, but how do you secure them on the other side? they have no threads or slots or even a place for a cotter pin or anything.

Epoxy? Hot glue? Snap em off and use nuts-n-bolts instead? How did these mount originally?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's possible they were secured in the same way as the little aluminium pegs on the seat trim of my GS550, ie (and I'm sure there'll be a technical term for these) those circular washer like fasteners that grip as they are pushed on and are therefore a complete baa-lamb to get off. Personally I'm going to find another "solution" when I refit the my trim.

wow, they're aluminum? well wonders never cease Thanks for the tip. Think I'll go rummaging around the bolt aisle for something more substanstial than those press-on grippy washer things.

How much did they cost? Can you post a picture showing size? I know a guy who'd kill for a set of those that would fit on an 1100E.

They were a fairly ridiculous $29.84 $US each ... bikebandit.com makes it dangerously easy to look up parts and hand over your life savings Good luck to your friend.

They seem worth it for the garage appeal though, plus they'll help keep my seat cover from unglueing.

Oddly though, the black line decal that runs the length of them has been discontinued, so I'm thinkinng of McGyvering a stripe with something like electrical tape (might get messy and slide off on hot days though... hmm... any suggestions?) Paint doesn't stick and a black marker looks like, well, i used a black marker.

If I understand what you want to accomplish, regular old pinstripe tape should be perfect.

It's available cheap at any auto parts store, and it's made to stick to cars in all weather conditions.

thanks for the pinstripe suggestion, picked some up yesterday and it worked like a charm.

Still no luck finding something to secure the little plastic pegs that poke thorugh.

I picked up a few couple "grippy" washers from a home centre (the metal ones with the teeth radiating toward the middle. Home Depot's the closest thing to a parts store around here) -- no luck though.

Anyone have a pic or name of what i should be looking for to secure these fiddly things?

If I understand you right the part you are looking for is a thin metel washer (hat shaped with a slit or two in it) that slips onto a fluted stud.
For my 78 these things are called seat trim fixing nuts (look nothing like a nut) There is 8 of theme under my seat and they could only be found at a dealership or mail order. Nothing @ the hardware store fit the bill for me. ANYWAY $15 for the set of 8.
And they don't come off after you push them on!

For those of you following the gripping saga of the gipping washers, i finally got tired of letting these fiddly little clips (which I would ve had to order) keep me from installing my seat and riding around beautiful vancouver....

So i grabbed every nut i had in my toolbox, found eight that were 'too small" and crammed em on, "self tapping" onto the plastic pegs with brute force and grim determination. I still can't believe i didnt snap any pegs off.

Success!

I too replaced one of those seat trims last year, and have since been carefull not to grip the seat edge when putting bike on center stand (dont have that gripper lift bar because of luggage).

That pin stripeing sounds like a better idea than the painting I did. Although mine wasnt black, it was maroon to match tank.

As far as the fastners, I went to hardware store, went to those little draweres of fastners. Got those flat (slightly curved) springy thingys, think they are called "speed nuts". But using a regular nut sounds better, can back those off if need be.
