Valve clearance adjustment on 750ES -87

Hello!

I own a GSX 750ES -87. For one month ago tha engine started making some strange sounds, especially when cold. It's a kind knocking sound that doesn't sound very good. I was thinking maybe it has something to do with the valves and that it would be a good idea to check the clearances.
Is there a helpful person here that would like to explain to me how that is done? How is the adjustment done? Do I have to change skims to get the right clearance?

And how about the chain (for the cams), can I change that without opening the engine too much?

What do you think about the knocking sound? It gets almost quiet when the engine is warm. Maybe it's the bolts that's holding the pistons (excuse me for my bad english) if it's not the valves or the chain... Hope not...

If your bike is anything like my 83 GS750ES you have to do the following to adjust the valves as best I can recall. 1. Remove the gas tank, 2. Take off the breather, 3. Remove the top engine cover (mine has a rubber gasket I've always reused after being carefully removing it), 4. Turn the engine until the first lifter is off the cam lobe and check the clearance, 5. Adujst as necessary. 6. Repeat for the remaining valves. If you've got a relatively comprehensive set of tools you maybe able to use something you've got to loosen the lock nut and then turn and hold the adjuster while retightening the lock nut. I couldn't find anything in mine and bought a valve adjuster tool.

If you started using a heavier motor oil about the same time the knock started drain it out and put in a weight that the bike calls for.

The cam chain you could probably change if you were willing to use a master link chain but it probably isn't it and would be best left alone unless you want to do a total rebuild.

You can try checking the cam chain tensioner.

If you're doing work on the bike you should also get the most specific reapir manual you can find for the bike.

Cam chain tensioner...

How does the cam chain tensioner work? Is it automatic? It looks like it's manual to me and that it could be adjusted from the outside but I don't want to touch it before I know exactly what to do...

What are the proper clereances for the valves?

The cam chain tensioner is spring loaded and has a cog or something that doesn't allow it to back out. I'll try to remember to look in the repair manual tonight to get the details.

When the engine is making this knocking noise, does the sound change if you pull in the clutch lever? If so, the sound is coming from the clutch basket. Mine has been making that noise for over 100,000 kms.
