Can you get the starter to move by jumping the solenoid?

I have a 1982 GS750e, and Im trying to fix it up. The problem I am having is that when I push the start button, nothing happens. I have tried everything I can think of, but no luck. I can stick a screwdriver to the relay and start it that way, or I can push and drop it in first gear to start it, but the start button doesnt work

Had the same problem. Ran a ground directly from the screw where the solenoid is attached to the frame to the battery ground pole. Fixed it right away.
