is there a problem with the rear driven joint on the 1000 and 1100 shaft drive . suzuki has a 2nd and 3rd generation driven joint has any one run into this problem (rear driven joint stripping)

Stripped splines are a rite of passage for shaftie owners -- mine went at about 50,000 miles, and just about all of the '81 - '83 models will strip out somewhere between 30,000 - 60,000.

You can extend this by using a purpose-made 60% molybdenum grease on the splines whenever you remove the rear wheel. Accept no substitutes, even if they have a funny color and a name like a science fiction villain. Moly grease from the auto parts store won't work, either -- it contains only a few percent of molybdenum.

Fortunately, the right stuff is about $8.50 for a lifetime supply at your friendly local Honda dealer.


Don't use it for anything else -- it's pretty much the only stuff that will protect metal surfaces in high-pressure "fretting" wear situations, but it's lousy for rolling, sliding, or non-metal surfaces.

You mean I need to start dumping the clutch on the down shifts, up shifts, and forget about the maintenance and moly in order to get these to wear out? That, and actually put more than 20k on a bike before I sell it will get me into the club...Where do I sign? :-D
