Gs 850G fuel guage won't work, Help Please

    Hello All,

I just got a 1982 850G and pulled the tank for carb maintenance and the fuel guage won't work after hooking everything back up...(The two wires underneath by the battery.)

Guage worked fine before. I tried to push the float up and down in the tank and the needle doesn't move.

Did I forget something when I put it back together?

    Any help appreciated.

    Hi Mr. jimfj,

Those two connections there by the battery should be all you need. Make sure those connections are good. Maybe they need new ends crimped on. I had to do that to mine because the bullet connectors were thrashed.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

You might also check the connections underneath the tank where the wires connect to the fuel gauge mechanism.

One of the wires on mine broke off a while back, and I finally got around to fixing it a couple of weeks ago. Kinda nice...

Didn't I read on here once a story about someone who accidentally connected the wires backwards? The reversed polarity drove the needle below E, so it looked like nothing worked.

I have switched the wires back and forth and wiggled them while they were connected to see if something moved to no avail.

i have also tried to manually manipulate the float in the tank and still nothing.

I have not tried a continuity test on the wires going to the sending unit. I did make sure they were connected underneath the tank.

Could i have messed something up runnig the bike with these disconnected?

Mr. Jethro's Fuel Gauge Send Unit Repair Guide

              Hi Mr. jimfj,

Well, if it's not a simple connection issue then have a gander at Mr. Jethro's Fuel Gauge Send Unit Repair guide. I'm hosting a copy on my little BikeCliff website. Maybe that will give you some more ideas.
