    a different stator question

OK, gang. I took my stator cover off tonight because it was next in line to be stripped and polished. I didn't like what I found inside. The stator is half cooked, which would explain my low charging voltage, and maybe the yellow spark. Time to review the stator papers to see if I should also suspect the r/r. This clearly won't be the first time the stator's been out in the bike's 25k history.

The strange thing is that there is also some mechanical damage. On most of the poles, there is a section of wire that has had the insulation either smashed or rubbed off. I don't see any evidence of rubbing on the rotor. I guess if it was rubbing, it would short and I would have no charging. Any idea how this might have happened?

I was going to ride this thing tomorrow. Now instead I'll be checking the stator in the parts bike and hopefully beginning a swap. Argh.

Is there anything stuck to the magnets in the rotor?

Or, there might have been at some point in the past.

Hmm. I didn't see anything, but I didn't really look either. I'll clean the rotor out before I replace te stator. Thanks.
