82 gs1100g splines?

If you order the spline unit for your bike, you will get one of the "new" (good) ones. The part number has been superceded once or twice since the '80s. They're $85 - $100, depending on where you buy Suzuki parts, and they are silver in color.

In other words, you don't have to go rooting through fiches for newer bikes. The parts ordering systems have already been updated with the new part number.



If you are way-cheap and/or not in a hurry, then you want to find a rear wheel or spline adapter from any 1979 or 1980 GS shaftie. These splines are black in color.

The "soft" splines were found in some 1981 and all 82-83 models. They are gold in color. No matter how well you grease them, they will eventually fail, usually at somewhere between 30,000 - 50,000 miles.


Brand new spline units are easily available and high quality, so don't get too crazy or pay a lot in shipping to get an old one. I generally won't go over $40 or $50 shipped, which is half the cost of a brand new one.

good to know. unfortunatly, i have no idea how many miles are on this bike. i'm really leaning to just replacing it so i know it's done. when i got the bike, there was no tach, the last mileage reading on the title was from 03, but the title was "unknown mileage. given that the splines show little wear, and everything in general on the bike shows little wear, i would hate to find out the hard way that's not the case :P

oh, and redman, i meant from college :P although if i DID know where to get bike financial aid.. there's quite a list of upgrades i want..

You're quite correct. My first GS was a GS850GZ, (1982). My splines failed at 24,000 miles. It was early Sunday morning in 1987 in Harrisonburg, VA.

I replaced the splines with a new set, also gold. The teeth were half worn by 40,000 mile. Good thing I caught it this time.

A friend of mine at that time had a 1979 GS850G, with 50,000 miles plus, and never a spline failure. I found out why. I located a wheel with old splines, and have been using the black old-style splines since then, even on my 1984 GK.

So you're right. I greased the splines and they still failed.

keep the splines lubricated with moly paste and chek for wear whenever you change your rear tyre
the splines wont fail you inbetween the tyre changes if they look ok at the time of the tyre change
the part is readily available and will be for years to come so no need to keep one in the garage
spend money elsewhere me thinks

Yes, you definitely should use apostrophes when appropriate. On the keyboard, the apostrophe is located to the right of the semicolon; this latter punctuation mark is, by the way, extremely useful in avoiding run-on sentences.

I suppose your keyboard's shift key doesn't work, does it?

Except you spell capitilisation wrong. You actually write and speak 'American' not English. True English is probably only taught in England.

I actually agree about the punctuation thing. It annoys me as well and makes the post very difficult to read and understand. I always keep in mind the saying about 'people that live in glass houses' though.

I'm the worlds worst speller and make tons of mistakes myself...but I try to put my posts together so they are easy to read. I can deal with the no caps thing (although It's just plain lazy in my view), but the no spaces between sentences (or even worse, no sentences) is a deal breaker for me - I don't read those posts very often thus don't help those people as much as others. I'm one grade less grumpy than Grandpa...but closing fast.

Personally, I think a new set of splines would be a fantastic use of the original poster's limited funds. This is a well-known weakness that can be easily corrected, so I think it's a great idea to go ahead and do so when it's convenient.
