Air box boot ring

Howdy all, been a daily lurker for long time and have bothered many members with my questions via pm's but now I am putting this out
for anyone to help a noobie out. I am getting my 80' 750E in running order and decided to replace all the air box boots with new. Ordered from flatout and got them today. I also ordered the ring indicated by #3 in the red circle below. My boots did not have these, but thought maybe they had been lost in the past so bought some. However after searching the boards and manual have no idea how these fit since I can not get them around the carb inlet. Probably don't need them but any help would be appreciated as the boot fits tightly when clamp is on. Oh, and thanks again to the many who have answered my pm's and got me this far. Pics of the bike to come when I get the carbs back on.

those go in the boot and hold them in the air box. not fun to install they could drive the Pope to drink.

I was under the impression that the 4 boots that attach to the airbox are nto available separately. Can you post a link? I'd like to get a set.

Not sure if this is 100% true but... those boots are available for bikes with BS/CV carbs but not for VM carb bikes.

The boots are available for some models and not others. To the best of my knowlege, the 78 GS1000 is in the 'not available' category. They are available for later, post 1980, GS1000s with CV carbs.

Thanks focus frenzy. It sounds like I put the boot into the air box then try to get the ring in to help hold them in. The drinking and cussing come after that, just like watching a Cornhusker game.

I've done the same thing recently..Those rings as stated fit inside the boots. There's a recessed channel that they fit into.

And it's kinda of a pain to get them in, but once you figure the first one out the other three are much easier. I put mine in at 90 degrees and then sorta spun them in there.

Thanks Larry. I was just checking that out and got one ring in with the boot out of the box. Do I put these in the boot, then push into air box, or air box first then push in ring? Which is easier.

Boot first, then ring.

Overlap the ring, put in the boot and spread apart.

BTW can't believe how soft these boots are compared to the old ones.
