    Stator cover bolt broke

    I was removing the stator cover from 700es when I noticed that one of the bolts on top had snapped off inside the housing. It snugs up to a point..what to do? Will it be ok or does it need to be drilled and tapped?

    Helicoil if there is enough meat in the threaded boss.

          There's no oil pressure behind it, and oil's only splashing around in there, so it'll probably be just fine.

          I'd still feel better with a thread insert in there, but I wouldn't get too worried about it.

            Is the '83-'86 GS550E/ES the only GS engine with a 2-part stator cover that also seals the oil galley and does see oil pressure? Major PITA.

              wait a second...clarify...the bolt is sheared or the threads are stripped?

              I don't what people's obsession is with helicoil kits, but there's plenty of room in there, if the threads are stripped, to just drill and tap the next size up, and run a 7mm bolt instead of a 6mm...or, if you can't find 7mm, which there's a good chance you can't, go with a .25" standard thread and alan cap. You'll have one odd-ball bolt but who cares? Just don't mix them up when you pull the cover...

                The bolt is sheared off inside the tread, its still long enough that it catches and tightens up ok, but will spin...
