81' GS750L carb problems/options

I am the new owner of a 1981 GS750L. After getting the tank cleaned, replacing the fuel line and fuel filter, and also swaping out the broken petcock for a manual type, I am still having running issues. I have come to the conclusion that the carbs are in need of rebuild and cleaning.
The bike starts up fine and idles fine when cold or warm out with or without choke. It falls flat on its face while trying to rev but if the fuel bowls get a few taps then it will rev out fine. I would like to just be able to rebuild the carbs and call it good but my airbox is pretty messed up and a PITA to work with. So I figured I would go with a Dynojet stage 3 kit and some k&n pods during the rebuild process. However I have been reading that the CV carbs dont cooperate well with pods, yet the older VM style carbs fair better with pod filters.
So basically I got this idea to swap some VM i.e. "mechanical" carbs onto my bike. Is this a workable option? If so what carbs should I be looking for? Also I read mention of using late 80's to 90's GSXR carbs as an option also.
The engine has almost 17k on it and is stock. I would like to go with pod filters based on the condition of my stock airbox, also for a cleaner look and more accessibility.
So in short... What mechanical carbs or GSXR carbs would be a bolt on possibilty for my 1981 GS750L?

The Dynojet kit will get you dialed in with the pods. Take it a step further and get a good 4-1 pipe and wake that powerband up!

There are hundereds of GSR members running pods on their CV carbs with good results. Get the Dynojet kit, some real K&N's or pods from Ape, slam it all together and go ride.

BTW, the DJ stage 3 kit is for bikes with an aftermarket header along with pods. Something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the fast responses. My main reason for seeing if a VM or mechanical style carb could be a direct swap was for simplicity and less parts to fail (diaphram only actually). Seeing as the most sensible option is to rebuild the carbs I will go that route and try to pickup a DJ stage 3 kit. Any recommendations of where to get the jet kit, rebuild kits, and what pods to go with? K&N is easy choice but is there any cheaper yet worthwhile alternatives?
I am still curious about going the mechanical carb route, so if anyone knows of direct swap carbs to do such a swap please chime in and let me know.

Don't waste money on "carb kits", go to cycleorings.com and order up a BS carb kit. Regarding VM vs. BS/CV carbs, I had two 550's with identical engines other than one was VM and the other BS. The CV carb engine had more power and better throttle response for everyday riding. Some people bash CV carbs for some reason but I'm not one of them. I'm also a fan of stock airboxes. Regarding pods, check Ape and see if the filters they sell will fit your engine - much cheaper than K&N and far better than the cheap Emgo type pods that can not be cleaned.

So re-use the existing gaskets and order a o-ring kit... What about the rubber plugs? Didn't notice those on the cycleorings site. Thanks again for the fast and helpful responses!

Rubber plugs may be needed, float bowl gaskets too. Z1 Enterprises sells that stuff for reasonable prices. Oh, and check the GSR homepage and check out the carb rebuild tutorial. Lots of good info in the archives here as well when it comes to carb rebuilding.
