I am trying to redo my carbies, the local deealer cannot help me as they cant even work out what carbs are in my bike.

I have seen the carby kits on this site, but i am trying to make sure they are the right ones.

may I also suggest you get the o-ring between the cab adapters and the head and some nice shiny bolts where they mount up.

As Rusty says, get an O-ring kit (including O-rings for the intake boots) from cycleorings.com. If the float bowl gaskets are crusty or torn get new ones, and get new rubber plugs for the pilot circuit if those are hard and crusty as well. Carb kits typically do not include all the various O-rings necessary, such as those to interconnect the carbs in a gang. Carb kit jets are also sometimes different from the stock Mikuni parts which are very high quality. Reuse as many of the stock parts as possible to assure the bike runs as designed.

      Good luck.

Along the same lines, is there a easy way to identify what carbs you have ? I have a 79' 1000, but I'm not sure if they are stock carbs. Is there a easy way to ID them ?

Load up some photos, or search some out at places like ebay. The stock carbs for your bike are VM26's - the same carbs that were used on pre 1980 GS750/850/1000's.

Thanks for the links and tips. I will definitely get the O-ring kit.
My Carbs have a 54mm intake, does this help anybody identify the model of them?

Not sure about the 54mm intake, but if you have an 80/81 GS, you likely have the BS34 CV-type carbs. On the other hand, it sounds like you are from "down under", not sure if you guys got the CV carbs in 1980 along with us Yanks.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you do have CV carbs on there, though. I just measured the outside diameter on a BS32 carb that I have sitting here and it is 52.9mm, so you likely have the BS34 carbs on your bike. Earlier bikes had the VM series carbs that were considerably smaller.

Quick way to tell BS (C.V.) vs VM (non-C.V.) models, is whether the tops caps are circular (CV) or rectangular.

Do they look like these CV
                or like these nonCV?

If you can then measure the inner diameter of the carb bore on the engine side, you'll know the basic model.
