Are there other reasonably priced turn signals that would substitute for the 2 wire stock 12V @23W signals in my 1983 GS 1100GL?

Take your pick -- there are about 14 pages of approximately 1,279 kinds of turn signals in the Dennis Kirk catalog.
It depends more on what look you want. Electrically they all work the same.
Keep in mind that if you switch to LEDs they don't draw enough electricity to trigger most flashers, so you'll have to use an electronic flasher or add resistors.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
