lost key

ok lost my only key today somewere in my yard whats the best thing to do now??? go to a lock smith and try to get them to make me a new key or buy a $120 kit off ebay with the ignition, seat lock, gas cap, helmet locks, and + 2 keys
open to any other options also
my bike is a 1985 gs700es if that makes any differance

Where are you located ? Maybe you can rent a metal detector.

Might even be able to convince a local pawn shop to rent you one long enough to find your key, you never know.

pop the helmet lock off from it and there should be a 3 digit code on the back of it. Take the whole thing to a local locksmith and if they are any sort of locksmith at all, they should be able to make a couple up for 20-30. Mine was $15 each time I've had a key made that way. It's easy. Either that or give that 3 digit code to Ray along with make and model (just to be sure) and wait for the keys in the mail. (it's quicker to go local but some locksmiths charge like $50)

Okay, a stupid question, but does a '78 1000E even have a helmet lock? And what the heck is that weird large "pin" just behind the seat lock? Perhaps the helmet-holder-in-question?

well a metal detector is out of the question bc our yard is 2 1/2 acres and im not even shure if it was in our yard or not

Two choices:

Take Ray up on his offer...that's probably your cheapest deal.

Take the ignition off. There are two screws holding it on. Underneath the ignition is a 3 digit number. That's the key code. A locksmith will be able to make you a key from that.

The code on the gas cap and/or seat lock isn't always the same as the ignition. The ignition code is the master.

OH, and the GS1000 doesn't have a helmet lock. That clip you see is the holder. You have to lift the seat to attatch/detatch your helmet.

I asked if he wanted the numbers, and he looked at me like he was going to stab me in the throat. "Don't need no &%$#@! numbers!" Oooookay then.

Of course, the original key turned up later that day. It's been proven that the only way to flush a lost object out of hiding is to buy a new one.

I won't be going back to that particular locksmith, either. Dude needs to work on his social skills.
