fix before selling update: 2 problems down, 1 to go

Hi,

I posted a few weeks ago about an 81 gs750E that (1) had bubbling paint on the tank, (2) wasn't charging, and (3) would often need to be pop-started, but once warmed up ran well and would start easily.

thanks in large part to this site, the situation is improving:

1) took tank off, completely stripped, and paid a friend to bondo, prime, paint, clearcoat and buff. check out the photo!


2) bought voltmeter, went thru stator papers. after rewiring a few bad connections, bike is now charging again.

3) now for the carbs. i pulled them off the bike yesterday. i went to o'reilly's to buy some carb cleaner, and spoke with a guy there who knows the GS bikes very well. since i've no experience with carbs, he suggested cleaning only the following four parts:

-main jet
-pilot jet
-emulsion tube
-fuel enricher valve

Do you all agree with this strategy?

I can find the two jets on the carb cleaning series PDF, but where is the fuel enricher valve and emulsion tube?

Follow the guidelines in the carb cleaning tutorial, your guy does not know these bikes very well. The enrichener he may be talking about the choke, the emulsion tubes, perhaps he means the needle jets. The carb bodies need to be cleaned, there are several tiny passages that need to be cleared out.

What he said plus get an O-ring kit from cycleorings.com. Most people try to short cut the cleaning process and wind up having to do the job a second time. Follow the procedure and you will succeed the first time.

NO. Actually, not just "no", but NO!
He may know the bike, as in He's well-acquainted with them, but he evidently doesn't know much about repairing them.

"Enrichener" is actually the correct term for the 'choke' on our bikes. There is not much to clean on that, beyond a cursory wipe-down. Because there is some rubber in the end to seal it, I don't dip them, I just wipe them down and polish them. (Yes, I do.)

This is one of those times that "short cuts" end up being "long cuts". Hopefully, the carb cleaner that you got was the gallon-size can of "dip". If not, go back to see if they have some, If not, find another store that does. Berryman's Carb Cleaner Dip is highly preferred, but Gunk Parts Cleaner Dip also works well.
