Front Wheel Axle

Okay I've started pulling the wheels apart for repair and new bearings, the only problem is that I can't get the axle out. Should it just slide out or are the spacers and speedo surposed to screw out. The manual just has a nice picture but not much info.

Just slides out.... Put the nut back on loose & give it a wack.

It's probably got some rust on it. Spray with PB blaster and let it sit. Do you have a piece of rod? Put the nut on the axle to protect the threads and give it a whack. Once you get it started, use the rod to drive it out the rest of the way.

Put the nut on backwards flush with the end of the axle to protect the threads and give it a good wack.

Sorry to ask the obvious. Did you loosen up the bolts on the bottom of the fork too?

Dang Cliff, did you go take that pic or do you take a picture of every bolt you unfasten?

You dont need to loosen those 8mm nuts from the bottom of the forks. They only hold the spacers. BUT if its tight take the wheel out that way (remove speedo cable) and take the axle nut off and see if the spacer under it will slide off. A brass hammer striking the axle with the nut sitting flush with the axle (on backwards) should loosen it. If not soak it overnite with the mentioned WD40 and try again next day.

The wheel is off the bike.
Srayed with WD40 let it sit for awhile gave it a tap and another, no movement. end of the axle is just a bit squashed.

Still the axle is not coming off.

So u didnt have the nut placed on backwards to save the thread did u? Doesnt matter heaps of axles at the wreckers. make sure u spray right in under the spacer/wheel gaps and let it sit OVERNIGHT and use a big hammer in the morning. Sometimes a big swing with a big hammer has to be used.

Yes, this. Whack the bastard with one mighty smite to get it moving. It'll do a lot less damage than pecking at it.

You can clean up the axle threads later with a thread file or 12X1.25 die, or just get another axle easily enough.

I had a similar problem with my rear wheel. The bearing grease on the axle shaft had turned into glue. I used a rubber mallet and pounded the crap out of it and she finally gave way. Not a mark on anything.

I would support the wheel with the axle perpendicular and apply some penetrating fluid and let it soak overnight then go from there. Use a rubber or plastic mallet.

I use a rubber mallet when doing any "persuading" of stubborn bolts or kids....
