    Z1 Petcocks V Stock

Went to put gas in the 83750ES tank today. Petcock was fine before I started messing with this bike (at least I thought it was!)

Had the tank in the trunk of the car & thought, I'll just check.... yep gas in the trunk! Not too much....

Got it home again - the 4 bolts going through the diaphragm were loose, tightened those up & it sort of seals when low on gas but still leaking from the petcock body a little....

So - I'm going to bite the bullet & get a new one, be done with it. Before I've always used stock but Jeff at Z1 stated on here once these came from the same factory.... so has anyone used one & got anything to report?

Here's another one but it just gives a bigger reserve from what I can work out (which I don't want) no other differences.

There is about $30 difference & I know Z1 will ship it fast so that's 2 plus points for sure...! I just want to be sure it'll work.

If it helps your decision any, Cycle Parts Nation has the stock petcock (including the o-ring) for $56.86

That at least narrows it down to only a $15 difference.

Do they ship fast... I'm ready to ride this damn thing finally...!

Do the ones from Z1 include the O ring for the tank? Doesn't mention it either way in the spiel on their site.

Bought a Z-1 replacement for my 84 Kat 750 about 6 months ago.
Comparing it to stock, they are identical. Jeff is probably right about them coming from the same factory.

My new one works great, incidentally.

Don't remember if it came with a new o-ring or not.

All the new petcocks I've seen (OEM and aftermarket) come with a new o-ring.

          Order the one from Z1.

Dan, if you go with Jeff ask him to ship Priority mail so you will get it faster. They normally use UPS which adds a couple days to the shipping time.

Z1 service is great, they ship the same day. My Z1 petcock came with the O-ring. Can't imagine anyone selling one without it!

                I was tempted but ....

$$$ for what. Take it apart, clean it. If you want a smaller reserve just cut the short straw inside a little shorter careful not to run out of gas since EVERY time i do ... crap in bottom cloggs the carbs .... and you gotta prime the carbs agin.

Prime doesn't work very well if your carbs are a bit clogged .. so take airbox off and put some gaffer / duct tape on carb mouths --- just rip off quick when engine starts cuz there might be flames !!!

Great advice Mr Frasermanx thanks for that. I will cut the reserve tube immediately thus bypassing the filter & get the duct tape out to start a fire straight away....

If you can give such pearls of wisdom after only 7 posts imagine what you'll be able to do after a few more

So you suggest reusing the 30 year old rubber parts like the diaphragm, main flow O-ring, and O-ring around the lever barrel?

i ordered a new petcock from Z1 and it did come with an o-ring. I also ordered a petcock from a local Suzuki dealer and that too came with an o-ring.

Turns out it was likely leaking from around the mounting bolts as one of the O rings had cracked. I replaced it with the Z1 one anyway, it's not identical but it seems a nice unit & the lever turns much easier than the stock. The only real difference is the vac tube goes on the same direction as fuel (out the back of the petcock) where as stock the 2 tubes face different directions. The Z1 one is actually a little easier to connect the hoses up to in my opinion.... Not got to reserve yet. It's not kicked in at the top of the red on the gauge so lets see what happens. ( I wouldn't have expected it to kick in yet anyway...)

                        Anyone need a stock one??

Friend's bike burnt down to the ground a few months ago. Original owner, '79 1000. Very nice machine, lost for want of a non-leaking petcock.

                          Don't take the chance, replace!

As I've always said, the petcock controls the flow of a highly flammable substance a few inches from your crotch. It's really not a good idea to take any chances with it.
