Their is some type of ratchet detent, may have a broken spring. You will have to remove the clutch to check it and maybe the oil panComment

Check out gixxer.com. There is a lot of info there on these bikes. I know that trans problems were commond with the second gear but there is a fix by cutting them or something like that.Comment

This is one of those "if you have to ask, then don't do it" type of things.
Unless you can get it darn near free, and IF the parts are available, and IF you're comfortable rebuilding a transmission with unknown problems, and IF you're comfortable with the concept that the rest of the bike and the engine are likely just as thrashed as the transmission.
I'd pass, personally.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

If i were a betting man, my money would be on this. First year Honda 750 Interceptors had this problem, the spring on the shift arm that turned the shift drum would break. These have the same style.Comment

True -- it could be a quite simple fix like that, or the thing could be completely fragged.
I guess it'll give you something to do and keep you out of trouble for a little while, either way.

A common problem on the gsxr engine is for the spring on the selector pawl to break & this can jam the pawl & prevent you shifting gears, well worth whipping the clutch cover off & having a look if the owner will let you
Has the bike been dropped on the l/h/s ? if so the selector shaft an push through slightly, this also moves the pawl with the same results as above
lastly if its been dropped on the gear change the shaft can bend, check it carefully, an out of shape seal or an oil leak from this area can be an indication of a bent shaft
failing all that either the selectors themselves or the shim washers between the gears are shot, possibly jamming the box & chipping gears (2nd & 5th are favorite) ! either way its a complete strip down to sort it properly
good luck
