Ok i took my 77 750 out today and as usual i ride as fast as i can get away with.. I was going 95 MPH up I75 and when i got off the exit ramp near my house i noticed a slight tick tick tick coming from what seemed like the center of the engine...cam chain area. I called the dealership and went over everything yet AGAIN with Joe and did exactly as he said to adjust the tentioner. I didnt loose the nut thats on the knob ( #20 in the fiches) or anything like that. The knob has lots of spring tention and all is secure on that side. Joe told me to loosen the jam nut and screw on the left side, tap the adjuster lightly with a screwdriver, then tighten the set screw and the jam nut. I did all this and it seems to be quiet now. The only thing i have changed from my normal maintenance is that on advise here i switched to the rotella 15 40 oil. so what do you suppose caused the noise in the first place? everything was tight when i left and nothing was loose when i got back..it wasnt ticking when i left either..it sounded normal...Talked to Mike Riddle last night and he had a simular problem except the nut on the spring side of his tentioner had came off.......

You shouldn't tighten the screw. The way to do this is to tighten it then back it off 1/4 to 1/2 a turn so the plunger is free to move. Hold the screw in place and lock it with the lock nut.
If you tighten the screw you lose the automatic adjustment.79 GS1000S

KUDOS to the Hog..seems to be fine now. well Bruce if its ruined i will have to sue half the membership which told me it was what to use instead of paying 20.00 a gallon for the SPECIAL motorcycle oil. On about half the cam chain tensioners I've encountered, someone has tightened the setscrew all the way.
I've never figured out why people do this -- I mean, if you don't know how something works, why mess with it?

it was tightened all the way..thats what i THOUGHT the mechahnics at the dealership told me to do. Thanks to hampshirehogs quick response and pointingb this error out it may have well saved me an engine.
