Its going pretty good. The head has bigger valves, cam's are done, head gasket's done.

Porting and flow bench are next.

On my end I'm redoing the electronics plate. There is lots of room now without having an airbox. I'm making a box for storage and tools just on top of the battery, then maybe a catch can for the oil breather.

Still have lots of little details to deal with but its getting closer to being done.

Any pic's of the head or it being flowed on the bench?
Before and after results? (On that same flow bench.)

Am enjoying the read, especially the compression and valve calculations.

It may be a bit late for this but did you consider just putting a GR 650 engine in your frame if they have the same crankcases/engine mounting points. Looking back, if you are determined to keep the 400 bottom end would you consider machining the 650 barrels shorter and using the 650 head as an easier/alternative proposition?

Hi Paul, I've never considered a GR engine in this bike. The bolt pattern is close but not a direct swap. It would give me a bit more torque sooner but that engine was tuned to be a real powerhouse. I wanted to keep as much of the outside looking stock as possible.

              The GR specs
              Bore 77mm
              Stroke 70mm
              Comp 8.7:1
              chamber volume 37cc's
              50 hp @ 7200
              45nm tq @3500
              5 speed

              The 400X
              Bore 67mm
              Stroke 56.6mm
              Comp 10.5:1
              chamber volume 17cc's
              42 hp @ 8500
              28 nm tq @ 6600
              6 speed

If I were to use a GR head and block the compression ratio would be 7.2:1
Its just not the way to go.

In order to get the compression back Up I would need a gs 450 or 500 head but that would mean going back to a two valve design.

Here's a teaser for you guys.
Before was 23 in 20 ex
              After: 25 in 22 ex

No flow results yet, looking forward to it though.

Got some time this weekend to get to the battery box I'll post some pictures of the process if I can.

As soon as I get all the parts gathered up.
I think near the end of the month it should be ready.

We'll ignore the fact I took my 450 off the road at the beginning of 2002 and it went back on the road at the end of 2011

No pics or it didn't happen eh?

                          Well here you go:

In this pic I still have to clean up the wiring when I find a good fuse panel.

                          And New RR location:

                            Well?

                            Pictures of the engine together?

Cool... interesting place for the R/R too, at least it should get lots of air flow there

Although it would be slightly more effective if the fins were pointing fore and aft rather than side to side...
