Thankfully the cam journals show no damage and that leads me to believe the bike has at least had oil in it most of it's life. I don't know if that's enough to be thankful about, but it's a step in the right direction.
Yes it certainly looks like it had a hard life!

Considering most of these GS engines are basically bullet proof someone had to do something awfully wrong to get that sort of result...

Two of the frictions from when I dis-assembled the clutch basket last night. Found most of the missing pieces.

Not much done today other than washing up parts that were removed. I'll get back on it tomorrow and split the cases.

I know..just that had I had a way to know all the history or other things I surely would have never called him that fateful day. Too bad whoever had it before had grenaded everything. Soon as he has a list for me I will be crating up the parts and getting them shipped.

Chuck, I've repeatedly said I've enjoyed this from the day I got it and that hasn't changed one Iota. There isn't one thing I've not been able to do to bring her back from the dead, nor will there be. The only thing at this point, is which avenue is more feasible, repair or replacement. It's no different than choosing what shade of gloss to paint the hand controls.

              To me, this is relaxation.

Cases are split, but I've got a 'lot' of cleaning, inspecting and measuring of components before I'll have an idea if repair Vs. replacement is best. Right off hand as it looks so far, a crank is all it's going to need. The trans gears look good, the bearings feel smooth and other than all the corrosion on the outer case halves, every thing looks good at a cursory glance. Even the dogs look good!

I found the last piece from the clutch friction disc.

I'd hate to see the condition of the engine if this was a plain bearing motor. Thank God for roller bearings!

Your gonna be fine from what i can actually "see". All that friction grit will wash right out. I am running down to Frank Zs today and will check in from time to time. I have tomorrow off and will be able to fetch parts then...let me know soon as you do...

Chuck, I'm going to take the parts into work a little at a time to wash them up so I can inspect them properly. I still need to measure the cylinder bores today and some time later this week, break down the cylinder head. After that I'll be able to assess the damages properly. I still need to figure out if my sand blaster will work well using glass beads so I can 'de'-corrode the cases.

You know what you can do in the mean time if you'd like, get a price on shipping the complete engine and ask Randy if He has a crank that's already removed from an engine.
If this thing only needs a crank and He doesn't have one that's removed, I'll find a source for one rather than you breaking down an engine for just a crank.

Like the rest of the components, I'll measure the chain and make a decision weather or not to replace it.

I work s l o w l y... but methodically. Plus I've still got to finish the wall in the back bedroom and put front brakes on Marys car.

Glass beads is what i use on my engines and side covers and it does a super nice job.. Use a spray distance of maybe 4 or 5 inches and all will look like smooth satin finish.

I suspect you are talking about using your hand held spot blaster for doing the bead blasting? The one we used on penelope's rim at your house in Hazeltucky. It did a nice fine job and exactly the surface finish I'm looking to achieve.
