Coathanger wire. Take a wad of the blue (sturdy paper) shop towels and loop one end of the wire to hold it. Insert through gas cap or petcock hole and soak up. Its actually a bit easier if you invert the tank and insert through the petcock as the last drops will pool at the rounded top of the tank.
Works everytime I tried it.
Good luck with the project.

I always used a shop vac on the blower mode. Tried to do it on a fairly nice day, put the tank out side with the shop vac blowing into it for an hour or more, then just let it sit, even inside the house with the cap off for a few days before I worked on it.Currently bikeless

Methylated spirit. Tip some in, give it a shake and tip it out. The last of it will evaporate into the air and take the fuel with it. It evaporates faster than fuel does and it is a good way to remove any moisture as well as it also absorbs water.
BTW - This is how you fix 'water in your fuel' if it ever happens. The meth allows the water to disperse in the fuel and be burned with it.Comment

well there you go. kills 3 birds with one stone, (if you take the tank badges off first!) removes all the dents, strips the tank ready for painting, and does the gardening as well
. make sure its at least half full!!!!!!!!!
