    Front fork studs

I broke one of the axle studs on the right hand fork. Can these studs be replaced? the bike is a 1979 GS850G. thanks Jeff

Yes they can.Did it on the 83 fork I used on my 85 750EF project.Just used a vice grip on the old stud and with a bit of a heave it came out.I have lots of extras so did the same thing on the one I pulled.Back in with loctite.

If theres enough stud sticking out you can put a nut over it and weld it on..then use a wrench or socket to extract it. weld it plenty heavy to take some good torque.

A bit of heat will help soften the thread locking compound on the old stud, too. Don't get too crazy -- don't want to boil your fork oil...

You can get new 8mm studs from any real hardware store or any real auto parts store.

In other words, you want the place where a grumpy old guy will help you find what you want, not the places staffed by ditzy teenagers who can't do anything if they can't find it in the computer.

The heat from welding on the nut will migrate and sufficiently loosen the thread locker up in there. Just try extracting them soon as you get done welding the nut on and its good and hot.

To the guys that replied about my quandry concerning the axle studs. Thanks. To Mr Matchless, your article abput blowing out the fork seals using a compresser/bike pump was great, works like a champ. Jeff.
