my ruddy bloody 100 90vx19 front tyre still leaks crap..

hi guys i put a new bridgestone battleaxe 100 90Vx19 still will not stay up i smeared a small amount of grease around the inside of the rim which is marked turbelesson the edge of the rim ,its a 1980 gs1000e in australia ,,, any suggestions would be great or will it be better to take it to the tyre dealer in a couple of weeks... this is frustrating regards oldgrumpy

putting grease on it was a mistake !!! Grease will break down the rubber. Use tire lube or dish soap. Take a wire brush and clean the rim !!. If need be fill the bathtub up and check for leaks

Yes, first figure out where it's leaking. A tub of water is pretty much foolproof -- just look for the bubbles.

Might be the old valve stem, a kinked bead, or something you didn't see in the tire. If the bead is damaged, you'll have to replace the tire.

FWIW, dish detergent can cause MASSIVE corrosion on aluminum wheels when it's used as a tire mounting lubricant.

If you can't get tire mounting lube for some reason, make a weak solution with a mild soap, NOT a detergent -- Murphy's Oil Soap is a good brand in the states (not sure if you have this in Oz), or a bit of saddle soap in water would work, or a solution using a mild liquid hand soap.

Take a red scotch-brite pad to the sealing surfaces of the rim and make certain ALL of the corrosion is removed. This is one area where you can't do enough to get everything spotless.

Sometimes the sealing surface (wheel to tire bead) is a bit corroded. Carefully polishing it to remove corrosion is best. Tire stores also use a sealant applied liberally. That sealant can be bought from some car parts stores.

The bead area on my rear wheel was caked with gunk so I scrubbed the crap out of it with a green scrubby and simple green before fitting the tire. No leaks!
