front caliper body off gs850 has crazy side to side play

I rebuilt the front calipers on my 1980 GS850 that has GS850 brakes from the 1979 model. I have done this before on my gs550 no problem that I recall. I replaced all the rubber bits and pieces and cleaned the inside of the bore and piston. However, The caliper itself moves side to side on the two bolts that connect the hanger to the caliper body. Seems to me there should be a shim there to restict side to side movement. all the parts listed in the parts fiche are all there. Any suggestions on whats going on here?

    Thanks
    Matt

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but that's exactly what it's supposed to do.

The caliper has to be able to "float" on those pins so that pad wear is even.

With the pads in place, it's not going to escape.

if you grab the calipers and try to shake em, they should shake.
