axel bolt for brake calliper really difficult to remove GS1000G

Hi,

I was just giving my front left brake calliper (newer type with square pads) an overhaul when I found that one of the axel bolts was really difficult to remove. It seems to me that if the caliper doesn't move on this bolt then the pads will not float on the disc properly. The item I am talking about is number 9 and 10 on this diagram (it's for a different model of bike, but basically the same part)

The reason I think that it is was difficult to remove was because the plastic bush (part 10) was deformed. I was able to get it back together again but the axel bolt is not very free moving as a result of this plastic bush. Do you think that this would be a problem to brake operation, I don't really understand the purpose of a plastic bush in this location?

have you de-greased inside both holes and made everything REALLY clean and used grease when installing. That plastic bush be a guide/damper mainly. unless its really deformed it should slide in and out. but everything needs to be cleaned and re-greased (8,9 and 10)

Swelling of the plastic is an issue. I'm not sure if it's related to the type of grease used or what but sometimes the swelling is extreme and the caliper doesn't slide well at all. I use heavy black moly caliper grease and that seems to work okay.

I have put some high temperature grease on it but I think it is too far gone now. Do you know what purpose this bit of plastic is for? Probably I should replace it, I should probably replace the pistons as well, oh well.

Does it do anything with floating the discs, if it only has to fit (and not move) then probably the old one will do just as well?

The caliper needs to slide on those pins.

Thanks, thought that would be the case. I've got some pistons, seals and bushes on order for the front disks.
