Front fork spring spacer

Hi there,

New to the forum and my first post is asking if anyone has any spring spacers for inside the forks of a 79 1000 S sitting doing nothing. I have taken ownership of a basket case and today noticed these 2 spacers missing. If you have a set but can't part with them could you send me the dimensions and I'll sort something out.

Yep, easy to do. 3/4” schedule 40 PVC, cut so that with forks fully extended and the spring in the tube the spacer is even with the top of the tube. Use a washer between the spring and spacer.

How about starting a rebuild thread or maybe even an introduction in the GS Owners section.
The S models have a big following here including a member that is keeping a registry.

It may be possible that the crappy stock springs have already been replaced, and maybe spacers are not needed.

With the forks fully extended, you need about 3/4" (19mm) of preload on the springs (if the spring rate is properly chosen, anyway). Depending on the length and brand of the springs, this usually requires cutting spacers to whatever length is needed to achieve that amount of preload with the fork caps installed.

Most folks use PVC pipe as mentioned; just take the time cutting to ensure both spacers are square and the exact same length.
