Can I use parts from 1100gk for a 750l

Hello new here. Like the title says I was wondering if I can use the forks from a 1982 gs1100gk on a 1981 gs750l. I was hit on the gs750l and pushed up onto the sidewalk and into a pole. The front tire hit the pole as i leaned the bike to the side to avoid smashing my face into the pole. Lucky it worked i flew over the bars past the pole and the bike ended up right beside the pole in the road. The bike was still running laying on the ground for some time. Enough time for people to exit there cars and I asked someone to shut it off, so Not sure if anything other then the forks and a tac cable needs replacing. The pole bent the forks very bad so I feel like they can't be saved or anything salvaged. I have a 1982 gs1100gk but when I try to lookup the part number for the forks on the 82 I can't find anywhere that lists the #. The 1982 has a nozzle on the top of the fork nut. Maybe anti-dive system? Haven't looked into this much yet was hoping someone here mite know. I know I don't like those big style bikes so I would like to get the 750l back up and running but if the forks aren't compatible I guess I'll have to buy some 750l forks if I can find them. Is it possible to have someone unbend the 750 forks?

Sorry to say the forks from the GK won't fit the 750. They're too big to slide up into the triple clamps. The nozzle on top of the GK forks is a schrader valve used to add air pressure. My '83 850 has that setup. Never worked though, but Sonic fork springs make adding air unecessary.

You’d be surprised what someone with access to a machine shop and a hydraulic press can accomplish. In my teens I was riding my Honda 200X trike like a hooligan, as one does, collided with a buddy on a dirt bike as I crested a hill climb and he was about to descend. He ended up in my lap, his gas tank dented; both my fork’s chrome tubes bent at different angles. The ride home was awkward but I made it.

Anyhoo, dad had access to a press at work, and I was amazed at how he was able to get them both straight like nothing ever happened. I know no details on the equipment used. But dad was my hero that day for sure.

Hello, I was messing around with the bike today. Discovered some things I need and need to do. One of the pipes has a dent in it. Going to take the pipe off and use a ball on rod and maybe heat to try and push the dent out? Maybe I could try the freeze water in pipe to push it out. I found out the handle bars are bent may be able to unbend good enough or buy new one. The battery is dead. The front rim is cracked. The tac cable busted off at the motor case and broke the tac gear tab and sleeve.

Any ideas how to remove this without taking off the top cover since it snapped off flush at motor casing? Nowhere to grab. Thinking of drilling a hole into it sideways deep enough to stick a screwdriver in to pry outwards. Really don't want to remove the cover and find the gasket rips and have to replace that. Don't have much of a budget right now and would just like to get it on the road again.

Last thing ill ask about today is the screw on the carb. The part # 13605-47070 seems to be obesolete and not carried anywhere. It's bubble # 30 on parts for carbs. Seems to be a m5x 0.5 pitch x 17mm length set screw. M5 fine pitch bolt seems to be a tough one to locate. I see the 13605-47080 is available. Its for a different gs but may work if I could find the dimensions of this bolt.

Looking at the condition on the valve cover in the last picture, I just know the you don't know if the valve clearance has ever been checked on this bike. This is something you need to do anyway, so you may as well get used to the idea.

Before you proceed. get or download a factory service manual from BikeCliff's Website. You want this one in the center column, top section. GS750 (16-valve; LT, LX, EX) Service Manual (17MB)

You will need to take the valve cover off and push the broken tack drive housing out from the inside. Mush easier to do if the cover is upside-down on your workbench. Yes, you will need a new valve cover gasket.

If you're not going to bother doing this, just leave it alone, and forget about having a Tach. Because if you manage to get it removed, and don't have a replacement to plug the hole, nothing will stop lots of oil from coming out of the hole.

Back in the late 1900s, I dropped the front wheel of my TS185 Suzuki into a ditch at speed.
It was just wide enough to stop the front wheel, folding the forks far enough the the wheel was into the motor.
I took the tubes to a local, independent bike shop, and when I came back the next day, they were straight.
Don't remember what they charged me, but it wasn't much.

Not sure you can find a place like that any more.

No It hasn't been checked. I don't do inside motor work. The directions I seen to replace the tac is done from outside with cover on. I have a replacement gear and sleeve ect coming. That's why I figured I could just drill enough to insert something to pry it out. I really don't want to open the cover ATM. May just leave it alone for now. Thanks for the info.

Good that you got parts comming for the tach drive, hopefully that includes the two seals.

The valve clearance check/adjustment needs to be thought of as routine periodic maintance.

Trying to use the front rim and tire from the 1100gk. Looks to be the same. When I reverse the wheel the speedo mechanism and cable begin to turn with the wheel. Could the rim be issue? I mean apparently the rim is touching the speedo and dragging it with the tire? Maybe its just some rust contact that will wear away with some driving? Maybe it got damaged some how during the wreck?

There is a fair chance that the entire 1100 front end will fit on your bike. You will have to transplant both the forks and the triple clamps. Tons of guys put late model forks on their bikes, so there is no reason you can't use the GK forks.

Regarding the tach drive, you MUST remove the valve cover. And get over your fear of adjusting the valves. It's criminal to ride the bike into the ground because you wouldn't adjust the valves. It's one of the more critical things GS bikes need with regularity.

Yes my thought was it sounded like something serious in the motor. Now that I was able to

1 change the oil and filter.
2.remove and clean carbs.
3.change the spark plugs,
4. removed and did not accomplish much in removing the dent from the pipe maybe some.
5. fixed and rewired the rear turn signals and rear light.
6. replaced the front forks/axle/rim.
7.replaced the handle bars.
8. replaced the battery.

With these small things I was able to get this bike out of the corner of the garage and off the blocks it was on. Its now able to be moved/ loaded / took to someone to evaluate or repair, but it most likely will be pushed back into the corner and forgotten for awhile. I was hoping there wasn't anything wrong with the motor.
