A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    1981 GS650G sat for almost 20 years

My Suzuki shop manual (from 1981) says to use gasoline, which I do. Not so wise, say many. I generally have some K1 kerosene on hand, I would think that would be slightly safer. I would guess a life span of many years if the filter is kept cleaned and re oiled every year or so. And not ripped...

    1981 GS650G sat for almost 20 years

The filter media is supposed to oiled. Not dripping in it of course. Gets washed.in solvent, dried, then well dunked in 10w40, then squeezed out. Plenty of of patting down to remove excess. Just oily but not dripping. Is the cover taped on because the top and/or bottom attaching clips are...

    1981 GS650G sat for almost 20 years

Any conversion would be what you can cook up. I haven't done it, but someone once suggested removing the back cover and flipping it. That may get one port oriented correctly, but not the other (fuel, I think). I would suspect that the 81 style and the 82-83 style have exactly the same mount...

    1981 GS650G sat for almost 20 years

Just wanted to mention that the 1981 GS 650 G has a one year petcock setup. The vacuum and fuel ports face the opposite direction of the 82-83 models. Difference is that 81 models did not have a fuel gauge and have the petcock located differently. I haven't seen any aftermarket petcock that...

    Brake pad advice

Another new fan of the EBC semi-sintered pads. I've been running a set for 2 seasons. I'd say they are closer to an organic than a full sintered, but definitely have a little better bite than organics. Pretty predictable feel. They also added some noticable braking to the rear vs. organic.

    Clutch cable replacement . . . .

Thank for this thread, Redman. It reminds me that I have ignored the fraying clutch cable on my GS for way too long. Today, the tach cable started going wonky at anything but idle. I've only had a clutch and tach cable in the parts pile for about 3 years now. I've probably lubed the ends once...

    Tire Vendors ?

I just re-read bwringer's post and he did mention using the Shinko 230's. Sounds like the 230 may not be better than the 712 for tread life.

    Tire Vendors ?

Those Shinko 712's are true knocks off of the Bridgestone S11 Spitfire tread pattern. Come to think of it, if I remember correctly, the Kenda Challenger is as well. The S11 will wear longer than BT45 and especially BT46. The S11 rears will square off pretty quickly on much slab riding though...

    Tire Vendors ?

I have used Rocky Mountain ATV many times in the past. I believe Rocky is one of the 3 motorcycle tire importers/wholesalers in the whole US. They seem to have really pared down listings in classic bike sizes, last I checked. My last couple of purchases were from Dennis Kirk, who seems pretty...

    Stator and R/R Replacement on a 650G

I used the Triumph harness that many have used for years. Someone just recently posted the Triumph part no. again. T2500676 That fits the sockets on the Shindegen SH775. For the attachment to your charging system, you'll have to dissect the wiring bundle and adapt it as necessary. As I recall...

    Stator and R/R Replacement on a 650G

On my GS650G, I was able to mount an SH775 in the same original location and mount holes as the original R/R. It just barely fit as it's slightly larger.

The Yugo???? Dude only repairs Yugos

A friend of mine bought a new Yugo in about 1990. He couldn't stop bragging about getting a new car for $4k. In less than 2 years, he had 2 engine replacements under warranty. When he needed the next engine, it was out of warranty, so he quickly parted with it. I guess that they were somewhat...

    Rockauto Discount Codes

I just got this one emailed to me. Supposedly good through Apr. 28. 227638126206987099 I've done hundreds of orders with them for more than 20 years, but they seem increasingly stingy with them. Unless I'm steadily making bigger ticket orders.
