GS1100G 1984 wiring subharness in headlight bucket

LeT

Forum Newbie
Hi all, I've recently acquired a dead/abandoned GS1100G. It's got a strange rattle can and brush paint job but looks fundamentally sound. Not much wrong with it beyond surface corrosion and grime. I was told it has electrical problems owing to a previous owner having caused a short circuit somewhere. I'm going through the electrical system piece by piece, so I'm trying to understand what I'm looking at. I'm familiar with difficulties off this era, having previously had 78, 79, 81, 84 GS/GSX models. My question is to do with the harness in the headlight. I'm confused because the model is GU71 on the headstock, which is a post 83 GS1100G (D or later). The wiring diagram and service information in the factory manual show the main harness running up to block connectors for components like the clocks etc. to be plugged in directly inside the headlight bucket.

This bike actually has a subharness with two block connectors that plug into the main harness. The main harness divides under the frame near the coils and runs up both sides of the headstock into the headlight bucket. The subharness it's quite substantial and includes a diode in a clear sleeve. Looking at wiring diagrams and the exploded diagram pictures on CMSNL, that only matches the GK models. The subharness also has three way block connectors for the front indicators, not individual bullet connectors as I was expecting. The bike arrived without indicators, front or rear. Does anyone know if straight G models came with a wiring harness like this?

Thanks

Léon

Thanks for the reply. After a lot of detective work, I've worked it out now - it is a wiring harness from a1983 "D" GK model, despite the chassis being a regular G. I've no idea why but there you are. It's now a 42 year old machine so who knows what had happened to it on all those years.

The workshop manual for G/GL/GK models with supplements up to 1986 was the key resource for me. Plus I removed the loom from my bike, laid it out on a big table and compared it in detail to the wiring diagrams in there factory manual. GK models have this subharness whereas G and GL models do not. There are differences in the GK earth connections and also the electrical panel design and block connectors (left hand side of battery box) over the years, plus the ignition switch has a direct block connection rather than a plug on the end of a lead. My G ignition switch had been patched into the GK subharness with what amounts to an adaptor, with a typical Suzuki four pin connector on one side and GK six pin on the other.

If I can find an easy way to reduce the file size of pictures on Android, I'll post one. As it is, I've taken loads of pics but they are all to big to be allowed here.

So I think I've found an android solution to image resizing. Here should be a picture of the ignition switch adaptor, allowing the GK harness to work on my G model.

The ignition switch six-pin block connector on the wiring harness is black and visible between my thumb and forefinger. The adaptor cable is between my middle finger and little finger. Note that it is not fully wired as the standard Suzuki ignition switch is four pin. The GK ignition switch includes an accessory position, bridging the extra two terminals in the six-pin block. I might run an extra external switch to do that job, if I can think of a use for this accessory wiring (USB socket maybe... ).
