GS1100G 1984 wiring subharness in headlight bucket

LeT

Forum Newbie
Hi all, I've recently acquired a dead/abandoned GS1100G. It's got a strange rattle can and brush paint job but looks fundamentally sound. Not much wrong with it beyond surface corrosion and grime. I was told it has electrical problems owing to a previous owner having caused a short circuit somewhere. I'm going through the electrical system piece by piece, so I'm trying to understand what I'm looking at. I'm familiar with difficulties off this era, having previously had 78, 79, 81, 84 GS/GSX models. My question is to do with the harness in the headlight. I'm confused because the model is GU71 on the headstock, which is a post 83 GS1100G (D or later). The wiring diagram and service information in the factory manual show the main harness running up to block connectors for components like the clocks etc. to be plugged in directly inside the headlight bucket.

This bike actually has a subharness with two block connectors that plug into the main harness. The main harness divides under the frame near the coils and runs up both sides of the headstock into the headlight bucket. The subharness it's quite substantial and includes a diode in a clear sleeve. Looking at wiring diagrams and the exploded diagram pictures on CMSNL, that only matches the GK models. The subharness also has three way block connectors for the front indicators, not individual bullet connectors as I was expecting. The bike arrived without indicators, front or rear. Does anyone know if straight G models came with a wiring harness like this?

Thanks

Léon
