A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GS 450S

I agree. This is my second one. I sold the first one when I found this little gem that still has the unobtanium cowl fairing.
Great to see you pop up again with a new project!

These are such sweet little bikes. Holla if I might be able to assist!

Thanks for the offer Brian. I am going to try and do this one all by myself.......That being said, I may need some help dialing in the carbs. Currently it starts and runs fine but there is something not quite right. It will idle okay but eventually the idle speed will slowly drop down to the point of dying.
Is your number still the same ? XXX) XXX-2761 ?

Could be lack of fuel I guess. Does it start right back up straight away or do you need to wait for the float bowls to fill again?

If it's proving difficult, the earlier GS500 carbs are a straight replacement, although I would recommend swapping the intake boots for the proper GS500 ones as they do sit a little better in those compared with the 450 boots. Also, the intake side of the 500 carbs are a whopping 60mm if I recall correctly, so you can't just use the stock airbag.

I'm running 2001 carbs on mine with pod filters and the GS500 intake boots and it runs very well. The pod filters aren't the best but they're good enough. Incidentally I also run 2001 GS500 camshafts which changes the nature of the power slightly and my butt dyno says it's better in the mid range.

To answer the question. It starts right back up, no waiting required.
I currently have the fuel supplied by an auxiliary fuel bottle that is simply dumping fuel into the carbs. I also have the vacuum line plugged with a golf tee.

A bit of an update. I had to visit the front braking system, for obvious reasons. I also drained and cleaned the gas tank and connected it to the bike. I would rather have the gas supplied via the actual tank than an IV bottle, just to check the condition and effectiveness of the peacock.
All seems to be operating just fine. I may go on a test ride this weekend...

Ya know, you can go back and edit your post to fix spelling, etc. There's an Edit link at the bottom of any of your posts. On the other hand, we knew what you meant.:)

And please "insert" your photos, so we can see them full size without have to click on them.

And besides, Peacock effectiveness is a specification widely used in the motorcycle industry.

Anyways, my first motorbike was a 450, which I still own..I'll be following this.

I dunno, I sorta liked the peacock reference :ROFLMAO:

Curious to hear your experience with the front brake. Mine's definitely feeling a little worn these days and most parts are now unavailable from Suzuki. I suspect that the hole for the caliper axle that doesn't have the rubber boot on it is worn as it's got a bit of play in it now. The brake still works just fine (even having fun in the twisties) but there'll be a point where I need to seriously consider alternatives. I know I could do the Salty Monk conversion (measured things up for one of his brackets years ago) but no cash for that at the moment and I also don't know how easy those parts are to get over here either.
