A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    '83 GS650L - fork oil capacity?

Thanks. I thought there might be different capacities due to the varying fork styles of different models (G, GL, etc.), but i guess not.

    '83 GS650L - fork oil capacity?

Does anyone know the appropriate fork oil capacity for an '83(?) GS650L. I know there are submodels, so mine has the air assist and the offset forks with less of the fork lowers below the axle (see pic). the head badge lists it as a GS650GLD, with mfr date 8/82. If it's reallly an '82, it's...

Recommend a good tap and die set

I've had an Irwin set for a few years now and it suits my needs just fine. Sure there are plenty of sizes I don't need, but it has most of the ones I do need. I think I've had to buy two extra sizes, one for spark plugs and one M12 or M14 for cleaning out 15 year old under carriage threads so I...

    1982 GS550 stator problem

Jumping in on this, I may need one of those R/R from Ed/Nessism. The new battery on my '81 550T won't hold a charge and is now ~dead.. I haven't yet checked the stator or chased the wiring for a bad ground, but will try to get to that this weekend. What did you have in mind for a price, shipped...

    '83 GS650L - crazy large reserve?

This tank is small, 3.2 gal. If they used the same petcock on the 650L as other GS models with larger tanks, the same tube height for ON might be reached pretty quickly on this small tank. I'll assume everything is OK and fix other things on other projects.

    '83 GS650L - crazy large reserve?

The fuel sender is shot on my 650L so I don't know the fuel level from the gauge, but I reset the trip meter every fill up and seem to be switching to Reserve after ~90 miles. The carbs are synced, valves set, it's well tuned, but I had to make some guesses on the air/fuel mixture settings due...

1982 GS650GL Valve Adjustment quick question

Advance notice ... when checking and setting valves on these bikes, the biggest hassle is usually removing the petrified gasket from the cyl head and valve cover. It will take a lot of patience, chems, heat, and tools to get the surfaces clean. After using plastic scrapers, screw drivers, paint...

'81 GS550T front master cylinder - rebuild kit options?

UPDATE - For aspiring Dr. Frankensteins, the internal rubber bits from the GL500 front rebuild kit that I have on hand are extremely close to the GS rubber bits and the relative dimensions between the two plungers are the same. The external rubber grommet that fits around the is too small, so I...

'81 GS550T front master cylinder - rebuild kit options?

It would need to have a similar front brake indicator switch ... which BTW I just rebuilt using hand cut copper sheeting and a spring from a pen. There's a swap meet coming up next weekend, so that might provide an option beyond ebay

'81 GS550T front master cylinder - rebuild kit options?

Maybe this topic is covered in a thread somewhere, but does anyone know a good source for a front master cylinder rebuild kit for an '81 GS550T? It's also used on the 79-80 550L, the model with the cylindrical reservoir rather than rectangular, I can't get pressure on mine no matter how much...

    fuelcock/petcock replacement

I don't have a pic. I don't try to connect them directly to a petcock, instead I use short pieces of fuel lines to connect the elbows and filters as needed.

Can I switch to single front brake line for GS550T

As I overhaul the front brake system on an '81 GS550T can I replace the two front brake lines and joiner with a single line? I assume the joiner is just for the models with dual front disks. I'm trying to resolve a previously working system that sprung a leak and now won't achieve pressure...

Don't trust valve clearance measured on a hot engine

Overnight cooling for me. when we're talking about .03-.08 mm i don't want any thermal expansion.

    fuelcock/petcock replacement

I bought a pack of 90 degree brass elbows that allow more creative routing without bending the tubes alot. I've had cheap plastic fuel filters break due to the pressure from teh bends

    fuelcock/petcock replacement

After my failed attempt at converting the valve from my '81 550T, add me to the list of "just ordered a $20 petcock from AMZN, let's see how it works"

    Puzzling brake issue with CX500

Did you use correct DOT brake fluid? For example, DOT3 boils/expands at lower temps than DOT4, so using DOT3 in a system designed for DOT4 can cause over heating and brake locking. A short term fix is to crack the bleeder to relieve the pressure, but the real solution is to replace the brake...

vacuum petcock conversion - did I do it correctly?

My nylon plug has the hole that goes all the way through, which is why I suspect the NW position (and maybe the NE) is the position where the neither the ON nor RES outlets will line up with the hole in the nylon plug. I'll add a pic later today

vacuum petcock conversion - did I do it correctly?

thanks, my bike is an '81, so the petcock is a different model than the one in your link. Added a pic to the original post.

vacuum petcock conversion - did I do it correctly?

The fragile metal doodad inside my '81 GS550T vacuum petcock, the one that pushes out the plunger when in PRI, got mangled on disassembly. I prefer manual petcocks and couldn't find step-by-step conversion instructions, so I "guessed" with some hopefully logical assumptions. My process was: 1...
