A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

New to the Forums, a bit about me and the bike.

Hey, that's what life is for, to learn. You seem to be a cool guy from what you've wrote, please don't take the/my criticism too negatively. Don't consider your project a loss; first, L models we like to jest about anyway, and second it's a stepping stone (so to speak) to whatever your dream...

New to the Forums, a bit about me and the bike.

Oh, around here it's the other way around. Choppers tend to be driven by mid-life crises, wannabe-tough-guys and "ooga-boogas" that think loud pipes are impressing anyone. You don't see any young guys on those. Interesting how hip is defined differently in various locations. :) I think I need...

New to the Forums, a bit about me and the bike.

"i" is right above "k" on my keyboard. So it could be 5k miles, which would be quite low as well. I don't want to be unwelcoming to a newcomer, but those pipes make it hard. Do you live far from other people?

Surely there's a typo there and you didn't cut up a vintage bike that had merely 51 Miles on it.

    Ngk plug shortahe

Thanks for getting the info right from the source, chuck! And now we even have non-resistor replacement part numbers, which I can use until I have to replace my plug caps (unfortunately still have them, fortunately still good). As for resistance, I think a healthy GS ignition system (or modern...

    78 GS750 Project Bike

Hi Mike, head on to our "library" (bassclif/bikecliff's site) linked in my signature, then have a look at the service manual for your model. The routing is explained there. As for the installation, a member more versed than me may pass by; but you may want to have a look at a parts fiche for...

JohnnyL's Cafe Carb Problems Please Help!

VM's, hmm... I guess you have the obvious stuff covered already, so... - Floats can move freely? (Might be scraping the bowl gasket). - Slides can move freely and are connected properly to the trottle shaft? - Also, just to be sure, you've verified that the needle valve closes off properly? No...

Less Toxic and Offensive Test Fluid?

Hm, they're a german company, and a friend of mine has access to some B2B channels for chemicals. Maybe we'll be able to get more reasonable prices - but I imagine sending it over the big pond will cost a lot. In any case, I'll try to think of this when I'm calibrating the next bank, and will...

The peril of a marginal main fuse.

Sure, sure, whatever gets one home. I would've done the same. I have enough experience with fuses to know that one needs to be cautious when the replacement fuse blows in short succession. Fuses do get tired, and thankfully they go down in rating. As for 25A vs. 15A melting the harness...I...

    Getting a second bike

Correct, '79 have points (includes condensers). You'll definitively have some work cut out for you. A complete carb overhaul will be in the books. The intermittant firing means that at least some cylinders may have appropriate compression and the ignition was okay at that point, but not much...

    Restoring a Garaged 1979 GS850

Welcome to the forum! Obviously we need don't need to point out our resources; since you really did your homework already. Looking forward to tag along to your restore. As for: I think that's down to the PO's nature, not to the bike. Maybe the damage you encountered isn't from tipping over...

    Getting a second bike

Dunno. Just judging by the pictures...For 4k: - I'd expect a much nicer seat job with some seams - Fresh tires _on_ the bike - Sure as hell no rusty screws (for example, a complete SS engine cover set can be had for 40$) - Running (where's the airbox?!) - Sure af no L pipes on a E frame...

    testing shindengen sh 775

As others mentioned, you test them installed on the bike. Unless you have a pricey test bench setup and you're at least semi-professionally into electronics, you don't have an alternative to the bike.

    High speed wobble?

Huh, I've generally experienced my 550's as quite stable; and I've pushed them up to 180km/h (111mph). And it must be said, I've discovered serious repairs on one of them (welds on triple tree; welds on the frame). That being said; I had some icky situations with all of my bikes; but it always...

    1983 GS550ES Fuel Delivery Issue

So when you wrote in Post #1 that you've cleaned the carbs; you didn't mean you had them apart? That would be Newbie Mistake 1B. Could've saved a whole lotta time.

Cylinder stops firing when bike heats up

The ohmmeter doesn't tell the whole picture. One failure mode of a damaged coil is that the HV side will spark internally when hot (as everything expands, insulation is no longer sufficient). A multimeter however can only tell you about the most serious of damage, as has to use very low current...

    1983 GS550ES Fuel Delivery Issue

Those are VM carbs? Then it could be that the "butterfly" part connecting the throttle cables to the combined throttle shaft came loose (It's what happened to me). If it doesn't start at all however, then there must be a different issue. Try dropping down a teaspoon of gasoline down each...
