A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    voltage to coil measurements--too low?

Ok, things seem to be improving--I'm still losing voltage, but less. What I did: -disassembled and cleaned both kill switch and ignition switch assemblys -all new connections for both switches at junctions behind headlight -cleaned all battery connections and grounds, new positive 6 gauge wire...

    voltage to coil measurements--too low?

It has Dyna S ingnition now, actually. Does it matter whether the magnet is lined up a particular way? Making good progress, got a bunch of contacts cleaned or respliced, replacing some more connections today. The kill switch assembly was indeed full of crud, and the 3-way plug connector...

    voltage to coil measurements--too low?

Thanks all, incredibly helpful. I'll start digging in this afternoon. Time to bust out the glasses for the wiring diagram... Didn't know this. So in the case of the kill switch, my touch points would be would be where orange and yellow/green connect to the switch? Test with key and switch both on?

    voltage to coil measurements--too low?

Thanks everyone. I haven't experienced the symptom of starting only when the starter is released (that I've noticed). The bike starts and runs pretty readily, though needs choke for a bit longer than it should. I'll do some more cleaning / restoring connections and repost new results.

    voltage to coil measurements--too low?

I've been battling rich conditions so I thought I'd check if weak spark was in the picture--coil resistances tested ok on both, but after reading another thread here I checked the voltage to the coils, here's what I got: 12.3V at battery (resting since yesterday) 10.2 at positive lead to coils...

diagnosing rich condition (idle at rest versus under load)

$125 total cost and three days left on the auction, Yikes!

diagnosing rich condition (idle at rest versus under load)

I read his stickys and they were invaluable to my learning. My pipes are close to stock (4-2, Mac) so maybe I don't need the bigger jets or richer needle position? Thanks, I'll try a bit more time at resting idle. I read original service manual, used Clymer's, watched videos, and used Paul...

diagnosing rich condition (idle at rest versus under load)

Thanks, I want to use Colortune but hard to get one at the moment since production was shut down by Covid--I'm keeping an eye on suppliers for when stock begins to ship. Not sure I understand why you're recommending a richer position on the needle and a bigger main jet, though? I thought those...

diagnosing rich condition (idle at rest versus under load)

After some tuning and plug reads, I need help diagnosing potential causes of rich conditions under load. After a carb rebuild I adjusted pilot fuel and air screws a couple times to get decent plug color and highest idle. Synced carbs too, though #4 gauge was wonky so I'll do that again...

    plug readings and cleaning preference?

Thanks, good to know. I'll still happily accept recs on cleaning plugs, since a clean set can't hurt, right? I thought it worth reposting this excellent explanation of chop tests too (which I just found) to complement what you've said, in case it helps anyone else who might see this and need...

    plug readings and cleaning preference?

So I've embarked on tuning my newly rebuilt carbs for the first time--I think I have the principles straight, still battling rich conditions overall--simple (hopefully not stupid question): What method for cleaning plugs do people prefer between readings? I've got three sets of new plugs I'm...

12v switched circuit recommendation (dyna s intstall)

hi all. first, I must confess I am not the best with electrical matters, so beg patience and thanks for the help. I'm installing a dyna s electronic ignition and need to choose which place (I gather there are several) I connect to the switched "key on" 12v circuit. I have located the...

rubber bit on caliper holder ID

Here's the pic, finally was able to upload after I took a screenshot (site didn't like the file for some reason).

rubber bit on caliper holder ID

Front caliper. Yes I've looked, as I said. You can see the clip in the drawings but it's not identified. I've circled it in this graphic.

rubber bit on caliper holder ID

I haven't seen this little rubber grommet on any parts diagrams (or the clip that sits in it, which fits into the notch on the pad). I'll replace them if I can, since I'm replacing all the other rubber parts and pistons. What are they called, and anyone know if they are available? I suppose I...

    great day yesterday

Thanks. I do need pistons too, and wanted to replace everything--there are four holder boots (not two) and two o-rings inside the caliper holders (not shown in the partzilla diagram). Powerhouse sent this handy image diagram to illustrate that there are two almost identical calipers with some...

    great day yesterday

Technically I'm ordering today. I have searched high and low for front caliper parts for my bike--the only rebuild kit I've found that matches is from Brake master in UK. I posted a thread about that in the brake/chassis forum. I wish I had other options because the kit is way overpriced in my...

    great day yesterday

Well, I passed a milestone yesterday with my new (old) bike, with help from members and all the info here on the forums. I finished a complete teardown and rebuild of my carbs, rejetted for new K&N filters, finished valve clearance adjustment, and set ignition timing / point gaps. The hardest...

    ultrasonic solution recommendations?

Is that ok on the piston bore? the King tutorial on the gsresources home page says nothing harder than nylon bristles on that, but I didn't make much progress on the deposits with a toothbrush... cheers

    ultrasonic solution recommendations?

I want to put my caliper bodies through the ultrasonic, any recommendations for solution? kind of cleaning agent and ratio? I used 50/50 pine sol / water for my carbs and that worked well, but these deposits on the calipers are stubborn. thanks
